A bunch of Colorado Photographers Having Fun

L
ast week a few of us Colorado Wedding Photographers got together for some dinner and chit chat and wouldn't you know that a photography session broke out!

We gathered above the studio of James Christianson in Longmont, set up some lights and backdrops, and a couple of willing models stopped by. I was kinda digging the look of this entire level of this building being totally unfinished and bare and so I expanded my scene to include all of the fun. I even borrowed Erik Bakken's camera as a prop, set my camera on a tripod and turned on the 10 second timer, and then jumped in the photo myself to add to the fun. :)

But I didn't want to hog the spotlight all night, so I took my usual spot behind the camera for a few.

And I'm loving this self portrait. Would it be weird to blow up this photo of me for myself? Yeah, probably. I think I'll get it for Emily for Christmas.

Two weeks in the life of a Denver Wedding Photographer

I
love the busy wedding season! Recently I had nearly half of my 2009 weddings (11 of 25 to be exact) fall within 8 weeks of each other! The first of the 11 was just a few days after my wife and I returned from Ethiopia with our son - so, it was an adventure indeed!

But all of that is over now and what is a Denver Wedding Photographer who loves keeping busy supposed to do with himself? Turns out, there's plenty out there to occupy the time.

Like a good old fashioned Colorado snow storm. (I think I may put this image in my fine art gallery!)

A couple of weeks ago I had the pleasure of attending a luncheon at the all new Della Terra Mountain Chateau event center in Estes Park. It looks awesome and if you're searching for a venue for your mountain wedding - make sure to check this place out! Me? I'm thrilled to be shooting a wedding there next February.

While there I had the chance to meet (finally!) wedding consultant extraordinaire, Debbie Orwat, of 'Save the Date Events' and the forthcoming StudioWed Denver. I haven't worked with her, yet, but I hear very good things - so if you're looking for a wedding consultant, give Debbie a call! One thing I do know - she's super friendly! Just the right kind of person you want to have in charge of your wedding day.

After snapping a few photos of her, she turned the tables on me and took my camera! I'm completely uncomfortable on this side of the camera and so I began to act like a goofball...

Last week I had the chance to do something completely out of the ordinary, and photograph a corporate event downtown. Pete Coors was the keynote speaker on opening night. Listening to him and others talk business was so enlightening! He also took a few cracks at 'those brewers in St. Louis' and it was kinda funny...

Afterward there was a little schmoozer with drinks and hours 'devours. I watched Mr. Coors head over to the bar and I got this funny vision of him ordering up a Fat Tire or something... But as you can see, that wasn't the case.

The next night our esteemed Mayor, John Hickenlooper, was the speaker. He comes from the business world and it was fun hearing him speak. According to him, Denver has better Lamb than New Zealand! I LOVE rack of lamb, so I'm now feeling the need to track down a place that's serves Denver Rack!

Also presenting was Elise Wiggins, chef at Panzano. I've never been there, but after hearing her speak and after the taste exploration she took us on - eating at Panzano is now on my 'must do' list!

Of course, it was Halloween recently. Look at our cute little lion!

And this past weekend our church had a fun little outing at Sunflower Farm. It was Philip's first time being old enough (or, brave enough?) to go on the zip line. He was loving it!

Broomfield Portrait Photography - The Erichsons

Y
esterday I had a great time shooting a family portrait session in Broomfield, Colorado with the Erichsons - check it out!

This bluff near their house with the incredible view of the mountains was being hit HARD with wind. For awhile there, getting anything with a view of the mountains in the background just resulted in hair flying everywhere! At one point the girls turned to face into the wind and let it hold them up as they leaned out over the edge. I encouraged everyone to join in and then I jumped down the hill and got this image.

Mandi and Rob had an idea to get some photos of the two of them on their bikes. I love a new idea and had so much fun capturing these portraits of them. Motorcycles haven't often (read: haven't ever) shown up in the line of wedding photography so it was kinda neat from a creative standpoint to try my hand at photographing something totally different from my normal work!

Speaking photography lingo here... I wanted to dramatically increase my depth of field to make sure those mountains had some detail, so I believe I was shooting the previous photo and the next one at f/18 or something crazy like that. Thus I employed the 'Single Flash Multiple Frame' technique for these two images to get some illumination on Mandi, Rob, and the bikes. Result: Pretty dramatic stuff!

Then I went a little bit simpler with just one off camera light.

Makin' My Monday! (The Leather Craftsmen Edition)

That can't be right! I haven't posted anything new in 11 days!?

Sadly, it's true. But the reasons are plenty. Mostly I've been working hard finalizing wedding album designs for many of my summer and fall wedding clients. And now these books are being delivered to me and it is so rewarding to see all of the creativity and hard work and the beauty of a wedding day come together in these luxurious books!

So, who's 'Makin' My Monday'? Today that would have to be Leather Craftsmen. They are incredible!

When I first got started in wedding photography I chose Leather Craftsmen because that's what one of the guys who trained me used. Then, in early 2008 I attended WPPI, a huge Wedding and Portrait Photographer's Conference, and I was able to see and touch all of the album products available to me. The most popular style was obviously the Leather Flushmount Albums with what felt like an ocean of vendors offering their version of this style of book. Well, after looking them all over I was thrilled to know that Leather Craftsmen was the best of the bunch and I'm so happy that I've been able to offer these to my clients since I began in 2006! (And then, even beyond quality, their customer service has been out of this world. Thank You Leather Craftsmen!)

Here's the scene currently - 4 wedding albums waiting to be shipped out! (And there's a fifth not on this stack!)
