hao contacted me a couple of weeks ago about portraits for her daughter who was turning one. We decided to start things off at their house where their daughter might be more comfortable and we could get some photos of her in her natural element. Now, I don't like to post children's first names' for privacy reasons so we'll call this little sweetie 'Bella' because she is simply beautiful!!

After capturing some awesome photos of 'Bella' at her house and giving her a chance to get used to me chasing her around with a camera, we headed over to a local park in Thornton, Colorado for some photos outside. Here's the whole family.
I've known this crew for quite awhile and I can still remember sitting next to Jack at a Christmas Concert in Boulder, Colorado when he was younger than my son Philip is now!
It was great getting together with them recently to update their family photos.

Thornton Colorado Family Portraits | Miller Family
T
he Wilson's are blessed!
Great friendships don't come around too often and when you find one it's best to hold on to it! Well, the Wilsons and the Millers have been enjoying a great friendship for 9 years or so now and we are so thankful to have them in our lives. Last year we were able to visit them on Kara's parents farm in Iowa during Spring Break. I did a little portrait session with them then, and again just recently when they came to Colorado to visit us. With over a year between, look how much their daughter has grown!

Thanks for coming to visit us, Millers! Our kids loved having a 'sister' around the house. And we love having you as friends.
n September of 2007 I photographed Corrinn and Ankur Jolly's wonderful wedding at Lionsgate. Fast forward to this last weekend and I was able to catch up with them again for some photos. But this time they brought along this little guy...

He's 6 months old and so adorable!

What a blessing it is for me to celebrate all of these special moments with people. Wow! I am so lucky!

Just for fun I went and found a couple of photos from my blog post after their wedding. I found this one (back when I did more 'textures') that I ended up using in a full page magazine advertisement.

And here's another one from that day. Who could've imagined that not even 2 years after this moment...

There would be this little guy who could so fully fill up their hearts?

This is what miracles are made of.
treasure this day forever

Broomfield Portrait Photography - The Erichsons
Y
esterday I had a great time shooting a family portrait session in Broomfield, Colorado with the Erichsons - check it out!
Do you think he minds being outnumbered? Fuggedaboutit!

This bluff near their house with the incredible view of the mountains was being hit HARD with wind. For awhile there, getting anything with a view of the mountains in the background just resulted in hair flying everywhere! At one point the girls turned to face into the wind and let it hold them up as they leaned out over the edge. I encouraged everyone to join in and then I jumped down the hill and got this image.

Mandi and Rob had an idea to get some photos of the two of them on their bikes. I love a new idea and had so much fun capturing these portraits of them. Motorcycles haven't often (read: haven't ever) shown up in the line of wedding photography so it was kinda neat from a creative standpoint to try my hand at photographing something totally different from my normal work!

Speaking photography lingo here... I wanted to dramatically increase my depth of field to make sure those mountains had some detail, so I believe I was shooting the previous photo and the next one at f/18 or something crazy like that. Thus I employed the 'Single Flash Multiple Frame' technique for these two images to get some illumination on Mandi, Rob, and the bikes. Result: Pretty dramatic stuff!

Then I went a little bit simpler with just one off camera light.

Mandi and Rob totally rocked these epic bike+mountain photos!

Of course, we didn't have them with the bikes the entire time...

So cute!

Oh, yeah. Somewhere running around were the 5 girls! Here they are...

Musings by a Denver Wedding Photographer - What Defines Us?
D
on't look now, but this Denver Wedding Photographer got to thinking... What defines us?
I've heard so many stories lately from numerous family members, friends, clients, and acquaintances about LIFE. Stories of events that happen in the day to day as we go about our lives. Events that bring joy and events that crush us. And it really seems that as I listen, and as I speak, we communicate that these events define us. These events shape our story so much that when someone asks 'What about you?" Or, 'What about them?" We respond with "Well, I heard that this was happening to them..." Or, "Me? Last week I did this, and next month this is supposed to happen..." And that's it. If you know what I'm going through, what is happening to me, then you know me.
But I've got to tell you that lately I've been nagged by this thought that if What I Am DOING defines Who I AM then I'm in big trouble! Because what am I doing? I'm sitting at a computer for hours and hours each day, week after week. I'm going out on weekends and shooting beautiful photographs of fabulous weddings. And yes, I am a Denver Wedding Photographer. I'm a guy who loves watching movies in my free time. Listening to podcasts about them. Reading articles about them. I'm a guy who also enjoys playing board games with friends when I get a free evening on a weekend. I like concerts. I like football. And I recently discovered that I love sushi.
But recently I've been thinking, at the end of my days (oh, yes, I'm going there!), that none of that will amount to much and I'm certainly hoping that it won't define me. I hope that all of that would only define just the smallest picture of me. And so I've begun to think about what I want to define me. Beyond all circumstance, and all of the doing, who am I? And instead of the what shaping the who, how can the who then shape the what?
Um, you know what I mean?
...because if your husband is stationed in Afghanistan for a year, does that make you a military wife?
[ 1 ]
A single mom of sorts?
[ 1 ]
Does having a little brother make you a big sister?
[ 1 ]
Does completing a marathon in 3:10:10 define you? Being a huge Obama supporter?
[ 1 ]
Can Autism define you?
[ 0 ]
Being a 'Graphic Designer'? A 'College Student/Barista'? The 'Youngest'? A Brunette?
[ 0 ]
Adopted? African-American? Healthy? Sick?
[ 0 ]
Are you everything you've lost?
[ 0 ]
And here is where I've settled. That Who I am is defined by Whose I am and not by what I do or what happens to me.
God has called me His child, and that's who I am. He owns me, I am His, and that's who I am.
Emily calls me husband and Rose, Philip, and Phoenix call me daddy, and that's who I am. They claim me and I claim them, and it's those relationships that make me who I am.
And so where does that leave me today? Trying to figure out how the who shapes the what, that's where. :)
